European Oak decking is cherished for its luxurious natural elegance, timeless versatility and remarkable durability. Able to be sanded and refinished, European Oak decking can provide your home or commercial space with decades upon decades of incredible, stylish service. With a stunning grain and distinctive honeyed hue, one of the most popular choices for wooden terrace is Oak. We specialise in different profiles and sizes of European Oak decking to suit your interior style: smooth, ribbed, grooved and a few more. European Oak is boasting with beautifully fine grain — ideal for a sleek, rich, luxury interior.

European Oak is valued for its tough, waterproof and durable qualities. European Oak Decking Smooth Profile is a good choice for a wide range of projects from large-scale construction to small self-builds. It is popular with architects and construction companies alike due to its aesthetic beauty, durability and longevity. European Oak decking has been specified for residential and commercial applications—including schools, shops and sports facilities.

European Oak Decking has a high percentage of heartwood and a minimum of sapwood. Dry timber is approx. 628kg / m³ with a moisture content of 18 – 16%. This higher density timber means it is not easily damaged and therefore is ideal for heavier traffic areas or applications where there is the chance of physical damage such as knocks or scrapes i.e. schools, shops, shopping centres. etc.

Compared to spruce and pine, Oak decking is more weather-proof because of its more dense wood structure (about 40% higher density than spruce/pine) and high content of resin. Because of this, European Oak Decking Smooth Profile doesn’t need extra treatment and can be installed in its natural state even in external conditions. Over time natural decking board will obtain a grey shade in external conditions without losing its durability. However, if the natural colour of the timber is to be maintained this can be achieved on site by using a UV protection deck oil.

European Oak benefits from impressive dimensional stability, low cost of installation, low maintenance and high manufacturing standards. It has a natural resistance to decay! Siberian larch decking doesn’t need extra treatment and can be installed in its natural state.

Siberian larch properties
Durability

Extremely durable. Although Oak is a medium density hardwood (approximately 780 kg/m3), its strength and durability surpasses many other timber species – including some tropical hardwoods. A fairly hard, heavy and dense hardwood, with high crushing and bending strength, low stiffness and resistance to shock loads. Preboring is advised for nailing and screwing, and a reduced planing angle is advised for irregular or cross-grained stock. Oak timber turns satisfactorily, is good for gluing, painting, sanding, staining and varnishing and will take high polish. European oak can be darkened by fuming with ammonia. Due to tannins present in the timber, oak wood will react with ferrous metals when wet. Select non-ferrous (brass or stainless steel) fixings where possible.

The natural durability of European Oak means that no treatment of the wood is required and any coatings applied are for aesthetic purposes only. Life span for this product of around 40 years (untreated) – 50+ years with right treatment.

Note from HLH: Oak is one of the very best woods for outside use. It is very resistant to most things and certainly not particularly suceptible to fungus although ineveitably as with any wood outside, it will support populations of all sorts of growing things (like lichens) – which however tend to leave the oak undamaged.

Dimensional stability

One of the benefits of this product is it’s stability, the thermal modification process reduces the moisture content in the board ensuring less movement.

Density

Oak wood is medium to high density, and can stay moisture free. This wood is very strong but it can still be bent. It is best used for tool grips, furniture, floor surfaces, tables, boat structures, decking, cladding or fencing.

Size

Our European Oak cladding, battens, boards and other products are available in various lengths, from 2m up to 3m. The standard board dimension is approx. 95mm, as this is traditionally the most commonly produced width. However, we also offer a range of other widths: 45mm, 55mm, 70mm, 95mm, 120mm and 145mm. The narrower board widths offer a number of advantages, including a wider choice of design options and improved dimensional stability. As an added benefit, narrower board widths are generally rated well beyond their specification.

European Oak boards and battens are supplied in linear metres based on random stock lengths at the time of order picking. Other sizes may be available on request.

Note: The board widths can change due to changes in moisture content. The boards are kiln-dried to approx. 9 – 11% before processing. Board width can slightly vary between production and installation on site (+/- 1mm). Eurpoean Oak boards are shipped in certain sizes from our warehouse, but a margin of error should be allowed for when making calculations, due to the natural expansion and contraction of the wood.

Siberian larch timber quick tips

European Oak wood is blessed with many natural properties which makes it low-maintenance. The low level of moisture in the wood provides natural protection against rot and decay. However, there are a few things you can do to treat and care to increase its longevity.

1
Prepare the wood
Sort your lengths

Sort your lengths. Make sure you’ve set them all up. We recommend ordering 10% more to cover waste material.

2
Know your tools
USE PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT

Siberian larch is very hard and dense wood. Use professional equipment for best results.

3
USE QUALITY FIXINGS
Use stainless steel

We recommend using only high quality stainless steel screws to avoid corrosion and stains on the wood.

4
TREAT WITH OIL
